2020 holiday and end-of-year message from CBHJ director Brady Ray

CBHJ Director Brad RayThe year 2020 will forever be marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a singular event that changed life on Earth and resulted in more suffering and loss than any event in recent history. The impact from this pandemic will be with our society for decades. Yet, for many there is hope in 2021 as the New Year brings the COVID-19 vaccine. As we end this year, we should take some comfort in this hopeful future as later generations will remember the powerful response of science in addressing this threat.

At the Center for Behavioral Health and Justice, 2020 was the year we learned that we are not "essential workers", but that many of our community partners embody this term. Clinicians, first responders, law enforcement, medical and health care providers have continued to work at the front line of this pandemic, often at great personal cost, while also managing the multitude of existing social problems that have been exacerbated in these troubling times. We are grateful for their service, and grieve the losses experienced by individuals and communities. Alongside our neighbors in Wayne County, the CBHJ mourns the loss of Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, a dedicated public servant and treasured community partner, after his passing from COVID-19 complications on December 17, 2020.

Taking the lessons of this year forward the CBHJ has a renewed commitment to ensure the effective translation of the current evidence-base to our community partners. We have seen how the evidence has helped us evolve our behaviors and reduce harm during this pandemic. The CBHJ looks forward to continuing to provide evidence-based recommendations and expanding our work to lend greater voice to those with lived experience and creating a system that is responsive, equitable, and just for all.

With another year coming to a close I hope you are able to take the time for self-care and celebrate the holidays safely in new imaginative ways with loved ones. May your holiday season be merry, bright and filled with lasting memories. I look forward to remaining connected in 2021.
