Phoenix DiMauro
Biography
Phoenix (any pronouns) is a University of Michigan-Dearborn alum, earning a bachelor's in Sociology and a with a certificate in LGBTQ+ Studies. Her undergraduate research centered on nonbinary gender, including the production of Nonbinary Gender: Scholarship and Experience, a podcast combining interviews of nonbinary individuals with specialized academic literature review. While completing her program, Phoenix interned at Detroit Justice Center, kickstarting her journey into the legal field. This internship gave Phoenix the opportunity to do legal research surrounding housing co-ops, organize nonprofit funding, and take part in community actions against ShotSpotter and surveillance technology in Detroit. Prior to joining the Center for Behavioral Health and Justice in 2024, Phoenix was working as a paralegal at Goodman Hurwitz & James, a civil rights law firm centering on police misconduct, governmental discrimination, and wrongful imprisonment compensation.
Responsibilities
Phoenix works as a Project Coordinator for the Jail Diversion initiative. Responsibilities include regular communication, data collection, and ongoing collaboration and coordination with behavioral health and criminal justice partners - including community mental health, county jail, probation/parole, courts, peer supports, and first responders - in counties across Michigan.
